How to set a password protection on MS-Outlook?

Are you really worried about your personal e-mails or data can be accessed by someone else, with whom you share your computer such as colleagues, family members, friends etc. Everyone outlook’s users want to keep safe their data with security. MS-Outlook provides a more secured way to enhance our e-mail’s security with its password protection technique on MS-Outlook folders.



Let me clear you one thing that Outlook just helps to give security to your .PST files via using this feature but this password locked .PST files can be accessed by any hacker and hacking threats. You can just set a password protection to make more secure MS-Outlook folders from intrusion by any other person.

Steps to set a password protection for MS-Outlook (2003 & 2007):


  • Click on the “FILE” tab on the left-upper side on Outlook and click on “DATA MANAGEMENT FILE” option.

  • After Clicking on “DATA MANAGEMENT FILE” option, then choose the “DATA FILE” option and double click on your data files in which you want to give password protection.

  • Now, You will get a small pop-window screen of that particular “DATA FILE” which you have selected in the last step.

  • Click on the “CHANGE PASSWORD“ button and with a new window it will ask for filling up old password & new password.

  • If you have already password then you can replace the old one with the new password. But, if you are a new user who is going to make a new password protection so just leave the old password option and only set new password. Finally, Click on “OK” option.

Steps to set a password protection for MS-Outlook (2010 & 2013):

  • Click on “FILE” tab and you will get another screen on the left hand side with a list of options.


  • From this option, select the first option of “INFO” and on the right side an “ACCOUNT SETTING” will appear.

  • Click on “ACCOUNT SETTING” option and select the first option of “ADD OR REMOVE ACCOUNT OR CHANGE EXISTING CONNECTION SETTING”.

  • Now, a new window will appear and from this small widow screen you have to select a “DATA FILE” tab and just choose one of your data files from the data file list.

  • After selection of particular data file click on “SEETING” tab which is just next to “ADD” button in above options.

  • Now, just click on a new pop-up window of “CHANGE PASSWORD” button and fill all the necessary security details require in that Change password dialogue box.

  • After filling the dialog box of “CHANGE PASSWORD” just click on “OK” button and now your data files are secured.

NOTE : You will not get any option of change password dialogue box if you are using a Microsoft Exchange account.
