What is Dumpster in Outlook Exchange?

Dumpster is a kind of storage space in Exchange Server, where user’s permanently deleted emails go after Hard Deletion and get saved with the stamp of "ptagDeletedOnFlag" flag which makes its appearance as invisible.



Using Dumpster, you can see these deleted items, filter them, purge them and also can restore. Dumpster in Outlook Exchange Server makes its more powerful email client tool in comparison of other email client applications.

Now, a big question for you is that “What is Retention Period?” Retention Period also belongs from the feature list of Outlook Exchange list, it’s referred to a time frame for which user’s deleted folders can be saved in a Dumpster. The Retention period Feature in MS-Outlook Exchange can change by an Exchange administrator.

      Exchange 2003 = 7 Days
      Exchange 2007 = 14 Days
      Exchange 2010 = 14 Days
Note: Remember, after expiration of the Retention period there is no other way to recover permanently deleted files.

Different Versions of Dumpster in MS-Outlook with Exchange Server:
  1. Dumpster 1.0 with Exchange Server (2007): Dumpster 1.0 runs with the MS Outlook Exchange and previous versions of Exchange Server. In Dumpster1.0, every deleted emails whether it’s getting deleted by shift+Delete & deleted from “Empty Deleted Items Folder” it moves into the Dumpster with the "ptagDeletedOnFlag" attribute. Due to this Stamped these files are no visible to email client users. In Dumpster with Outlook, Server administrator has to manage registry and make them “Always On”(free) for users so user can recover their data.



    NOTE:
    1.) Navigate to “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange\Client\Options”
    2.) Go to the registry and set it’s “1”
  2. Dumpster 2.0 with outlook Exchange Server (2010): New version of Dumpster enables more and gives more faculties to Outlook Users. Now, in Outlook Exchange 2010 Dumpster don’t take deleted files with the stamp "ptagDeletedOnFlag". Instead of it, they directly locate these deleted emails into “Recoverable Item” folder. In this folder users can get three sub-options for Recoverable Items for three different purpose:


    • Deletions: In Deletions, It’s removes "ptagDeletedOnFlag" from the item and moves it to the “Deleted Item Folder”.
    • Purges: This feature is only available in Dumpster 2.0 in which when we delete item from “Deleted Item Folder” it moves to “Purges Folder” and this “Purges Folder” can only access by the server administrator to recover items.
    • Versions: “Versions Folder” includes the original copy of all changed files in this folder and its not expose to the user.
