Why PST File Access is Denied After Upgrading to Windows 10?

Nowadays most Windows users are faced with many errors after updating their Windows OS from older version to Windows 10. Most Outlook users complain that after upgrading to Windows 10, they cannot start MS Outlook and access their PST. They faced this error message “Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window. The set of folders cannot be opened. File access is denied. You do not have the permission required to access the file C:\Users\<username>\Documents\Outlook Files\filename.pst.”

The main reason for this error is the prompt you receive for logging into Windows using a Microsoft account like Live Mail, Outlook.com or MSN as an alternative of your local account. In this condition, the permission changes for the PST file are not applied properly. Sometimes permission adjustments are skipped.

You can easily resolve this issue by changing the file permission via the following steps:

  • First of all right click on the Start button & select the File Explorer option.

  • Now Browse the PST file location, which shows error. For example: C:\Users\<username>\Documents\Outlook Files\filename.pst.
  • Now right click on the PST file and select the Properties.

  • After that select the Security Tab.

  • Now click on the Edit button.

  • Now a window pops up on your screen namely; “Permission for filename.pst”. and select your user account.

  • Select the full control permission.

  • Now click on Ok button until not all pop-up windows close.
  • After that repeat same steps for Administrators and System also, to have Full Control permissions.
  • Now restart MS Outlook.
After following these steps, you will easily resolve the encountered error. If after performing this action, you are still unable to access PST file then probably the file is corrupted. In this situation, you need to try Inbox Repair Tool, which is a free utility to resolve PST file issues provided by Microsoft. By using this tool you can easily repair Outlook PST file.
